+1 to multitasking is misery and 100% agree on core value #1 about creating a portfolio of meaning. Ultimately it's about taking stock of what you want out of life. Spending some time thinking about your core values, mission, and vision is time well spent.
I've also been appreciating Cal Newport's writing and thinking on the concept of Slow Productivity lately. Helps to see that the work and influence we want to be cultivating should matter on the scale of years and decades. This view helps us to keep the smaller things in perspective and give ourselves grace.
Thank you for this! I was a father of two under two (currently one and three) while starting my current data science and engineering consulting business. I also pull in extra revenue AI coaching. It’s absolutely insane to manage! It’s all beautiful, just intense.
I often tell people that I’m far more productive in the 40 hours I work now than I ever was in the 60-70 I used to work before kids. I timebox and aggressively focus on what’s most important. I also listen very carefully to my senior advisors to know what to put the energy I have into.
PS: can your parents fly to watch my kids?
PPS: I applied to be a Technical Leadership coach at Exec. Looks like an awesome platform! Would love to coach entrepreneurial dads on how to leverage AI to scale themselves.
This is super generous work Nick. The ability to "hold space" within the dialectic that is work/life comes down to values & solid systems, both of which you've nailed here (and of which I'm stealing some ideas for myself). Go well mate!
Brilliant advice, some of which I knew...but all of it is good to be reminded. Thanks for being so real about the challenge of being a parent and professional at the same time.

Aligning with my wife was crucial in making remote work work.
